Rod Crossman was born in South Dakota, raised in upstate New York, and now lives in Indiana where he makes his living creating paintings and as an Artist in Residence at Indiana Wesleyan University. Growing up he was the son of an outdoorsman and learned to love nature on many family outings. Those times and memories have had a profound effect on his work.  He attended Indiana Wesleyan on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 1976 with a degree in fine art.  Through the Herron School of Art, Rod had the chance to study in Italy for a period of time. Rod credits John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer as his fathers in paint.   His works are regularly featured in many publications such as Big Sky Journal, Fly Rod and Reel, Grays Sporting Journal, Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, Sporting Tales, etc. His work has also been exhibited and collected worldwide in places like the Smithsonian, Chicago Art Institute, Woodson Art Museum, Ward Museum, High Museum, and many others. He is honored to have designed Trout and Duck stamps for several states.    His favorite scenes to paint are those moments between the action. Rod’s paintings are about the mysterious and invisible moments that surround the outdoor experience.
